Paul State Forest serves as an island of forest in a sea of farmland. This 173-acre forest was given to the Commonwealth of Virginia by Judge John Paul, a United States federal judge in Western Virginia, who deeded these woods to the state of Virginia to be kept in its natural condition in 1961. It was bequeathed in honor his family for the purpose of “practical forestry and research.”  Its primary uses today include hardwood research and demonstration, timber production, hiking, and wildlife habitat protection.
