Currently I have a list of 12 places within Rockingham County where I often go to read, reflect

some quiet place, I am able to recollect scattered <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">logoi</i> via the coupling of reading, writing and the placid space of a park or vista where I am all alone. With a lack of distractions disparate logos form choices and the art of living via
composing, births thoughts that become part of the body for further integration,

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
After three months of physical therapy
and healing form sacroiliac joint dysfunction and a new exercise routine, I have
overcome an injury and have returned to riding, slowly hitting the road and
trails. This week while in Leesburg, Virginia, I rode the <a href="http://bikewashington.org/trails/wad/wad.htm">Washington and Old DominionTrail (W&OD)</a> to Herndon, VA (Fairfax County), a 15.5 mile stretch of the asphalt-paved
rail trail that runs from Purcellville (west) through densely populated
urban and suburban communities as well rural areas to Shirlington (Arlington
County) [total length 44.7 mi (71.9 km)]. The W&OD is one of the
skinniest parks in the commonwealth of Virginia, and also one of the longest.<o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
While riding I saw numerous
cyclist on everything from inexpensive mountain bikes to various commuters and
even some carbon-fiber road as well as runner, walkers and parents taking their
children on a walk. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I even met an
individual cyclist who was touring from DC to San Francisco. An added bonus to
the trail is a parallel horse trail that runs along much of the trail, which
provided me some time to ride some gravel. <o:p></o:p></div>
<br /><br />
I was grateful for the ease of the paved trail and only slight elevation climbs on what for me was my first day ride in recovery.DJ Seiferthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17586397023448004425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8883218524529389243.post-82394622462611989652018-12-09T08:00:00.003-08:002019-06-15T13:53:55.544-07:00A Year of Adventure and Solitude <br />

One gets a sense of a once small
community when you ride through Stokesville VA with its old railroad
depot and tracks. In fact it was flourishing wilderness town in the early 20th
century comprised of coal mining and saw mills. The town inhabited over 1,500
residents and workers with their own post office, a school, two hotels and an
engine house.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Various environmental and economic
forces brought an end to Stokesville’s economic enterprise: decreased forest resources,
emerging coal industry elsewhere, a pathogenic fungus (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chestnut_blight">Chestnut Blight</a>), the
introduction of the automobile, the abandonment of the railroad (1930) and a devastating
flood in 1949, all have left it a ghost town.</div>

While Stokesville is a small reminder
of the forces that plague our society today, it has remained on the map as an
emerging <a href="https://www.adventuresportsnetwork.com/sport/bike/virginias-harrisonburg-is-a-new-mountain-biking-mecca/">mountain biking</a>, <a href="http://www.bikepacking.com/plog/bikepacking-stokesville/">bikepacking </a>destination. Stokesville is evidence of a
kind of flux happening in America today—people taking the remains of detrimental,
human, industrial impact and creating healthy alternatives that place human
kind in a closer relationship with the earth and her/his body. Not only are there nearby trails, Stokesville is a gateway to the <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/gwj">George Washington and Jefferson National Forests</a><br />

Historical entries show the feed mill history actually dates back to
c. 1826. It was operated by a John T. Beery, who purchased the mill in 1864 from
Isaac Wenger. Originally wood and burned by raiders from the Grand Army of the

The Bluestone Trail has become divergent, routine route for getting
into town while enjoying more of the quiet and wild green space in town. I enjoy pedaling along Rt. 280 (Stone Spring Road
from Reservoir—all with bike lanes) before turning right onto the trail at Beery
Rd. Here Bluestone Trail crosses Blacks Run twice on the border of Pleasant Run
Townhouses, through Purcell Park, along Butler St. and then by way of its
dedicated path through a large student parking lot to Port Republic Rd (<a href="https://www.harrisonburgva.gov/bluestone-trail-project">Map</a>).
From there it moves into JMU campus where I typically take a left along
Lakeview Hall. This path leads along Greek Row to Bluestone
Drive where you have some choices as what direction you wish to follow. </div>

Camp Roosevelt is the location of the first Civilian

Jackson, Virginia [<a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/38%C2%B043'15.0%22N+78%C2%B039'18.5%22W/@38.7208362,-78.6573277,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d38.7208322!4d-78.655139?hl=en">38°43'15.1"N78°39'18.5"W</a>]. In a day when the Federal Highway Administration classifies
almost 20 percent of the US bridges to be "structurally deficient, it is no
astonishment to learn that the Meems Bottom Covered Bridge is actually the fourth
bridge across the North Fork of the Shenandoah River at this
location. The first was constructed between 1867 and 1868 and then destroyed by
a flood in 1870. A second was built by 1871 and underwent damaging floodwaters
in 1877. In 1878 a third bridge was built which was replaced by the current
structure in 1894 when the local people in a venture built a stronger, reliable
bridge by 1871 constructed from materials cut and quarried nearby. An early record in The Shenandoah Valley newspaper,
noted, “It is a simple span, wood, covered bridge, well built in every
particular—strong, durable, and substantial.” </div>

Located on the western edge of Bridgewater, Virginia along
the North River is Wildwood Park. It is the site of an old hydroelectric dam,
the dam-keeper's building (The Flood of 1985 erased the dam-keeper's building),
and adjoining grounds. Wildwood Park is highly popular, and there is
insufficient parking; so biking there is ideal. I chose this site on occasion (12.5
miles one way from my home) to take in the beauty of river and cliffs on the southern
bank of the river, plentiful trees and shade. A site like this invites quiet time to make a
cup of coffee with my camp stove and to read. </div>

I mounted my bike and followed
the Potomac River along the historic <a href="https://www.nps.gov/choh/index.htm">Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath</a> beyond
the confluence where the Valleys’ Shenandoah River feeds into the great
Potomac. During this two-day round trek between Potomac and White’s Ferry,
Maryland*, I witnessed amazing geographic gems that included the Carderock
Recreation Area known for its rock cliffs and the Great Falls and an exquisite
gorge with numerous islands and bedrock strath terraces (geographic fall line). Along the towpath I
could hear through its generous beauty and periodic locks, the canal’s story,
which operated from 1831 to 1924 and served primarily to
transport coal from the Allegheny Mountains to Washington D.C. The
wildlife is prolific with such highlights as old oaks trees, roaming deer, and sounds of many fowl including a multitude of geese. In fact, the Native Americans had distinctive names
for various parts of the river, even calling the Great Falls <i>Cohongarooton</i>, meaning "honking
geese". This living phenomenon provided many awakenings through the night.
Oftentimes I paused and gravitated toward that many rock features, elevated
terraces and gorges with abundant outcrops along the way. I have been summed to
return and hope to seek out its western sections that reach unto the Ohio River at
Pittsburgh. </div>

Paul State Forest serves as an
island of forest in a sea of farmland. This 173-acre forest was given to the
Commonwealth of Virginia by Judge John Paul, a United States federal
judge in Western Virginia, who deeded these woods to the state of Virginia
to be kept in its natural condition in 1961. It was bequeathed in honor his
family for the purpose of “practical forestry and research.” Its primary uses today include hardwood
research and demonstration, timber production, hiking, and wildlife habitat
protection.</div>

The Pleasant Valley Train Depot was built in 1874 and a
reminder of the prosperity that accompanied the valley after the civil war. It
is one of various businesses and depots that were built along what is today the shortline,
Shenandoah Valley Railroad.<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=8883218524529389243#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1" title=""><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%;">[1]</span></span><!--[endif]--></span></a>
